Quick Southern Banana Cobbler Recipe

The viral Southern banana cobbler with caramelized banana filling and a buttery crackly turbinado sugar topping that bakes into pure comfort dessert magic.

Ingredients
  

  • 6 –8 very ripe bananas sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar for topping
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract for topping
  • 2 –3 tbsp turbinado sugar

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, toss bananas with sugars, melted butter, water, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Let mixture sit for 15–20 minutes.
  4. In another bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla.
  6. Combine wet and dry ingredients until just mixed.
  7. Pour banana mixture into a 9x13 baking dish.
  8. Dollop batter over banana mixture without stirring.
  9. Sprinkle turbinado sugar over top.
  10. Bake for 35–45 minutes until golden and bubbling.
  11. Cool for 15–20 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use very ripe bananas for best flavor. Do not stir topping into filling. Turbinado sugar gives the signature crackly finish.
