Ingredients

  • 36 saltine crackers
  • 1 cup 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Substitution Ideas:
  • Use gluten-free or whole-grain crackers for dietary needs.
  • Swap butter with vegan butter or coconut oil for dairy-free.
  • Try coconut sugar for a lower-glycemic option.
  • Add almond extract or nuts for flavor variety.

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared sheet.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring until it boils (about 3–4 minutes). Stir constantly to prevent burning.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Pour caramel evenly over crackers and spread with a spatula.
  5. Bake for 5 minutes until bubbly and golden. Remove and cool completely for 20–30 minutes (or chill for 10 minutes in the fridge).
  6. Break into pieces and enjoy. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Notes

Stir caramel constantly to avoid burning. Let candy cool fully before breaking to keep it crisp. For gifting, layer pieces in tins or bags lined with wax paper.
