Homemade Greek Stuffed Onions Recipe

Ingredients
  

  • 6 large yellow or sweet onions
  • Salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup long-grain rice
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes 14 oz
  • 1/2 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill
  • Juice of 1 lemon

Method
 

  1. Boil onions in salted water until softened.
  2. Drain onions and separate into layers.
  3. Sauté chopped onion in olive oil until translucent.
  4. Add garlic and cook briefly.
  5. Add ground beef and cook until browned.
  6. Stir in rice, parsley, mint, allspice, cinnamon, salt, and pepper.
  7. Stuff onion layers with filling.
  8. Arrange stuffed onions seam-side down in a baking dish.
  9. Sauté garlic in olive oil for sauce.
  10. Add crushed tomatoes, broth, oregano, dill, and lemon juice.
  11. Simmer sauce for several minutes.
  12. Pour sauce over stuffed onions.
  13. Cover and bake at 375°F for 30 minutes.
  14. Uncover and bake an additional 15–30 minutes.
  15. Rest briefly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with crusty bread or a fresh Greek salad. Lemon wedges enhance flavor.
