Ingredients
  

  • 3 small oranges or tangelos 18–20 slices
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar for coating optional
  • 4 –6 oz dark or milk chocolate melted (optional)
  • Pinch of flaky salt optional

Method
 

  1. Slice the oranges into even 1/4-inch thick rounds.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and water and heat over medium until fully dissolved and gently boiling.
  3. Reduce heat to low and add the orange slices in a single layer.
  4. Simmer gently for 60 minutes, turning the slices every 15 minutes.
  5. Remove the slices with tongs and place them on a wire rack.
  6. Let dry at room temperature for 48 hours until slightly tacky but set.
  7. Roll in sugar or dip halfway in melted chocolate if desired.
  8. Sprinkle with flaky salt and allow to set before serving.

Notes

Slice the oranges evenly to ensure uniform texture. Allow proper drying time for best results.
