Ingredients
  

  • 2 large fresh oranges
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup filtered water
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 –3 tablespoons fresh orange zest

Method
 

  1. Wash the oranges thoroughly and zest them to collect 2–3 tablespoons of fresh orange zest.
  2. Slice the oranges into even 1/4-inch thick rounds and remove any seeds.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and water and heat over medium until the sugar fully dissolves.
  4. Add lemon juice and half of the orange zest to the syrup and bring to a gentle simmer.
  5. Add the orange slices and simmer for 10–15 minutes, turning occasionally.
  6. Remove slices and place them on a wire rack lined with parchment paper.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining orange zest over the slices.
  8. Let dry at room temperature for 4–6 hours or until tacky but not sticky.

Notes

Do not over-simmer the orange slices to avoid a mushy texture. Fresh zest is essential for maximum citrus flavor.
