Method
- Cook pasta in salted water for 8 minutes until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water, drain, and set aside.
- Sauté onion in olive oil for 3-4 minutes, then add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
- Add ground beef, cook 6-8 minutes until browned. Drain excess fat, leaving 1 tbsp for flavor.
- Stir in marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Simmer 5-7 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large bowl, mix cooked pasta with meat sauce, ricotta, and 1 cup mozzarella.
- Grease 9×13 baking dish. Spread half the pasta mixture, sprinkle with half mozzarella and Parmesan. Add remaining pasta mixture, then top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
- Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden. Rest 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Undercook pasta by 1-2 minutes before baking to keep it al dente. Let the baked ziti rest before serving to allow it to set.
