Ingredients
6 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith, Fuji, or Gala work best)
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup water
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vinegar (helps balance the sweetness)
1 packet of Kool-Aid powder (choose your favorite flavor for bold color and flavor)
Red food coloring (optional, for extra color)
Wooden sticks (popsicle sticks or skewers)
Butter (for greasing)
Instructions
Prepare the Apples:
Wash the apples thoroughly with warm water to remove any wax. Dry them completely. Insert wooden sticks into the top of each apple, about halfway into the stem. Set them on a parchment-lined baking sheet for easy cleanup.Make the Candy Coating:
In a medium saucepan, combine granulated sugar, corn syrup, water, and vinegar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Bring the mixture to a boil. Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature, and heat until the syrup reaches 300°F (150°C), which is the hard crack stage.Add the Kool-Aid Powder:
Once the syrup reaches the right temperature, remove the pan from heat. Stir in the Kool-Aid powder for flavor and color, and add a few drops of red food coloring (if desired) for extra vibrancy. Mix well.Coat the Apples:
Carefully dip each apple into the hot syrup, swirling it to coat the entire apple evenly. Lift the apple to let any excess syrup drip off before placing it on the parchment paper to cool. If you’re feeling creative, you can use two different Kool-Aid flavors to create a swirl effect.
Let the Coating Harden:
Allow the apples to cool for about 10 minutes at room temperature until the candy coating is firm.
Notes
Apple Variety: Feel free to choose any apple variety that suits your taste. For a tart contrast, go with Granny Smith apples, or opt for sweeter varieties like Fuji or Gala apples.
Kool-Aid Flavors: Use your favorite Kool-Aid flavors, like Cherry, Tropical Punch, or Grape, to customize the taste and color of your candy apples.
Candy Temperature: Be cautious when working with hot syrup. Always use a candy thermometer to ensure the candy reaches the correct temperature for a perfect crunch.
Storage: These apples are best enjoyed fresh, but if you need to store them, keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Avoid refrigerating them, as the candy coating may become sticky.
