Description
Greek Stuffed Onions are a traditional Mediterranean dish made with tender onions filled with ground beef, rice, fresh herbs, and baked in a tomato lemon sauce.

- 6 large yellow or sweet onions
- Salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup long-grain rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 2 tablespoons fresh mint, chopped
- 1 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Black pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can crushed tomatoes (14 oz)
- 1/2 cup beef or vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon fresh dill
- Juice of 1 lemon
Instructions
- Boil onions in salted water until softened.
- Drain onions and separate into layers.
- Sauté chopped onion in olive oil until translucent.
- Add garlic and cook briefly.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned.
- Stir in rice, parsley, mint, allspice, cinnamon, salt, and pepper.
- Stuff onion layers with filling.
- Arrange stuffed onions seam-side down in a baking dish.
- Sauté garlic in olive oil for sauce.
- Add crushed tomatoes, broth, oregano, dill, and lemon juice.
- Simmer sauce for several minutes.
- Pour sauce over stuffed onions.
- Cover and bake at 375°F for 30 minutes.
- Uncover and bake an additional 15–30 minutes.
- Rest briefly before serving.
Notes
Serve warm with crusty bread or a fresh Greek salad. Lemon wedges enhance flavor.
