Ingredients
- 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 cup shredded cooked chicken (use leftover chicken or rotisserie chicken)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened (optional but recommended for extra richness)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powde
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional
Instructions
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) . Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Prepare the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded chicken, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, cream cheese (if using), garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed .
Roll Out the Puff Pastry: Place the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. If necessary, trim the edges to create a neat rectangle.
Assemble the Jalousie: Spread the chicken and cheese mixture evenly along one half of the pastry, leaving about 1 inch of space around the edges. Fold the empty side of the pastry over the filled portion, pressing down firmly along the edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative finish.
Create the Lattice Pattern: Cut slits or strips into the top layer of the folded pastry and fold them alternately over and under each other to form a lattice design. This allows steam to escape during baking and creates an attractive appearance .
Brush with Egg Wash: Transfer the assembled jalousie onto the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top generously with beaten egg for a golden sheen.
Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, golden brown, and crispy. Keep an eye on it towards the end of cooking to prevent over-browning.
Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve warm.
Notes
- For added flavor, you can include caramelized onions, sun-dried tomatoes, or spinach in the filling.
- If you prefer a spicier kick, sprinkle some red pepper flakes or smoked paprika over the filling before assembling.
- To save time, use leftover roasted chicken or store-bought shredded chicken.
